Are You Tick Smart

YOU LIVE IN THE HIGHEST INCIDENT RATE OF #LYME DISEASE IN THE WORLD!

Connecticut is a high endemic area. Especially Southern Connecticut. The infection rates are highest in Fairfield, Windham, New London and Middlesex counties. Ninety six percent of Lyme disease is in just 14 states.

#TICKS LOVE KIDS

A study of Lyme infection in #Connecticut found that nearly half the offending tick bites happened while the victim was playing outside, making children the group most at risk for #Lymedisease. Many others were gardening when the infection occurred. Hiking was a relatively infrequent contact activity. THE DANGER IS NOT IN THE WOODS SO MUCH AS IN YOUR BACKYARD! Kids need to be checked head to toe for ticks after outside play.

TICKS ARE DELIVERY SYSTEMS.

Ticks are “vectors” scientists say. Deer ticks don’t have Lyme disease, but they feed off creatures that carry the disease. When they bite a human, they can transmit the disease. Taking measures to keep the animals tick feed on, like deer and mice away from your home, is one method of combating this terrible disease.

TICKS DO NOT ALWAYS TRANSMIT LYME DISEASE

Only deer ticks carry Lyme, and only about half the deer ticks found in Connecticut are carriers. Even if an infected tick bites you, transmission takes some time. If you remove the tick within 24 hours, your risk of infection is zero. Checking yourself and your kids after being outside is a must do chore. Each and every time; unless removal techniques have been implemented on your property.

LYME DISEASE SYMPTOMS

  • Fevers, headaches and dizziness. You may think you have the flu, but the symptoms come and go is the major difference whether it is flu or Lyme. Distinguishing the difference is hard even for a medical professional.

  • Sensitivity to light. Around 16 percent of people who suffer from Lyme disease have an increased sensitivity to light and can experience blurred vision.

  • Degeneration in Cognition. Concentration has become a difficulty. There may also be lapses in memory and a struggle to remember a name. Your ability to process information will slow down.

  • Fatigue. Lyme disease fatigue can be disabling. It is the most common symptom and is often misdiagnosed.

  • Joint Aches. One of the early symptoms are joint pain and stiffness. The pain may come and go. It may be severe and be fleeting. Most often the large joints are the earliest target of the pain. Joints may feel warm to the touch and be swollen.

  • Rashes. A Lyme tick bite looks like a solid red oval or a bulls-eye. It can be anywhere on your body. The rash does not bulge over the skin and does not itch. The presence indicates that the infection is spreading throughout the skin tissue.

  • Facial Palsy. Lyme disease is one of the few causes of palsy on both sides of your face. There may be numbness and tingling.

  • Heart Palpitations. Depending on the severity of the infection, Lyme can also affect the heart muscles itself. Light headiness, shortness of breath, chest pains can be symptoms of Lyme disease.

  • Night Sweats, Numbness in limbs, Regression in school studies.
